What does the technology enhance?
The invention of photography offered numerous enhancements to the recording of images.
Photography has not replaced painting as an art form. Instead, it has added a new medium to the list of possible tools of an artist. It has also democratised art making and art collecting - making it more accessible because of mass production.
The ability to capture images of flora and fauna was a major innovation for the biological sciences. Until photography, pictorial representation of plants, animals, etc. was only as good as the draftsperson's capability. Forensic science and the judicial system also benefited, as photography could accurately capture a moment and could be used as evidence.
With more realistic images of people, places and events, we are more likely to emotionally engage with stories from further afield.
Photography can bridge the distance between the viewer and the subject. And it can take us back in time.
